The Eleventh Meeting of the TURKPA Commission on Legal Affairs and International Relations was held in Baku on March 4, 2024 under the theme “Role of Parliaments in Scientific and Technological Developments and Legislative Support in TURKPA Member States”. The meeting hosted by the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan was attended by the members of the Commission, parliamentary experts and representatives of the TURKPA Secretariat.
The meeting was chaired by the Chairman of the Commission, member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Osman Mesten. Chairman of the Health Committee of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the TURKPA Commission on Environment, Natural Resources and Health Protection Ahliman Amiraslanov delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the host parliament. Chairman of the Commission Osman Mesten and other members of the Commission - members of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Javanshir Feyziyev and Malahat Ibrahimgizi, Vice-Chair of the Commission, member of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Abzal Kuspan, member of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Bibigul Zheksenbai (both in an online format), member of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Nurzhigit Kadyrbekov, member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Filiz Kılıç and Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er made speeches at the meeting.
In his speech, Chairman of the Commission emphasized that the painful memory of the Khojaly Genocide, which took place 32 years ago, was still fresh. He noted the importance of the "Justice for Khojaly" campaign launched to bring to justice those responsible. He also recalled the decision of the Azerbaijani delegation to cease its presence at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe due to relevant reasons and in this context, expressed that they stood with brotherly Azerbaijan.
Members of the Commission discussed the agenda items and approved the report and recommendation of the Commission, and the model law “On Personal Data Protection” for submission to the 13th Plenary Session of the Assembly. The Commission determined the theme of its next meeting and decided to hold the next meeting in Kazakhstan in 2025.
