On 3 March 2024, TURKPA organized a commemoration event dedicated to the "75th anniversary of the passing to eternity of Nuri Paşa, the Commander of the Caucasian Islamic Army, the "Liberator of Baku", in Baku.
The event was attended by parliamentarians, ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions of Turkic states, outstanding scholarly researchers who studied the life and activities of the great personality of the Turkic world Nuri Paşa as well as representatives of other relevant institutions.
Opening the event, Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er welcomed the participants. He noted that the event would create an opportunity to become more informed about the personality and heritage of Nuri Paşa as well as the historical processes of his period. Talking about the valor of the Caucasian Islamic Army under the command of Nuri Paşa in Azerbaijan, Secretary General stressed that liberation of Baku had coincided with a challenging historical and political period, and had been undoubtedly an event of great value, which played an important role in the history of Azerbaijani statehood. Nuri Paşa and Caucasian Islamic Army conquered hearts with their will and valor, and engraved one more example of Azerbaijan-Türkiye brotherhood to the memory of history with golden letters. He noted that keeping alive the values as Nuri Paşa and passing them on to next generations played significant role in terms of eternally remembering the sacrifices made for the future of the Turkic world and the demonstrated heroism, along with raising youth in the spirit of patriotism and loyalty to our roots.
Secretary General noted that the 44 day Patriotic War once again had demonstrated the strong bonds of brotherhood of two peoples to the world and Azerbaijan’s victory had been the victory of the entire Turkic world. He expressed his belief that the souls of Nuri Paşa, the martyrs of the Caucasian Islamic Army and all the sons and daughters who sacrificed their lives for the sake of motherland were rejoicing.
The program of the event included the screening of a documentary about historical facts from the life of Nuri Paşa and about the activities of the Caucasian Islamic Army.
Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er read out the message of Chief Advisor to the President of the Republic of Türkiye Yalçın Topçu to the event participants. Mr. Topçu, a man of culture and politics known for his endeavour committed to the national ideal [millî mefkûre], served as an independent Minister of Culture and Tourism in the 63rd Government of the Republic of Türkiye before being appointed as the current Presidential Chief Advisor.
The event was moderated by Editor-in-Chief of "Sharg" newspaper, honored journalist Akif Ashyrly. Statesman, member of the Council of Elders of the Organization of Turkic States Hasan Hasanov, Chairman of the TURKPA Commission on Legal Affairs and International Relations, member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Osman Mesten, member of the TURKPA Commission on Education, Culture, Social and Humanitarian Affairs, member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Hikmat Mammadov, member of the TURKPA Commission on Legal Affairs and International Relations, member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Filiz Kılıç, member of the TURKPA Commission on Legal Affairs and International Relations, member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Malahat Ibrahimgizi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Türkiye to the Republic of Azerbaijan Cahit Bağcı, academician Nejdet Karaköse, professor of the National Defense University Mehman Suleymanov, professor of Baku State University Nasiman Yagublu, Head of Department of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Firdovsiyya Ahmadova, Head of Department of Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Kamran Ismayilov, Rector of the Istanbul Trade University Abdülhamit Avşar, academician Minakhanym Asadova, academician Telman Nusratoglu, leading researcher of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Faig Alakbarli and Chairman of the Union of Modern Development, Head of Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Mubariz Goyushlu delivered speeches at the event.
The participants shared valuable information and historical facts about the life and activities of Nuri Paşa and spoke about the historical significance of exploits and heroism of the Caucasian Islamic Army under the great commander.
As part of the event, a photo exhibition containing the collection compiled by Akif Ashyrly was also organized where the participants became acquainted with photographs and documents related to the life and activities of Nuri Paşa.
