TURKPA attended Parliamentary Forum on Counter-Terrorism

On 22-23 June 2022, representatives of the Secretariat took part at the High-Level Parliamentary Forum co-organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), European Union and United Nations Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) within the framework of the EU-UN partnership “Strengthening Resilience Against Violent Extremism in Asia” (STRIVE Asia) in Istanbul, Türkiye, in a hybrid format. The theme of the event was "The Role of Central Asian States’ Women Parliamentarians in the implementation of PCVE National Action Plans".

The opening ceremony was addressed by Ms. Natalia Gherman, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, Mr. Jehangir Khan, Director of UNOCT-UNCCT and Mr. Aydin Jafarov, Deputy Secretary General of IPA CIS.

Representatives of national parliaments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, members of the Central Asia Women Leaders’ Caucus, women leadership groups, parliamentary assemblies, civil society organizations, as well as international experts, including those from UNOCT-UNCCT Programme Offices took part in the event.

The forum consisted of seven sessions, during which participants discussed the points such as recognition of the important role that women can play with the knowledge, expertise and experiences in the PCVE; promotion of a better understanding of the gender aspects of terrorism and violent extremism and how integrating gender perspectives supports addressing structural factors that may contribute to radicalization; growth of awareness of women parliamentarians on UN Counter-terrorism architecture and normative framework on gender mainstreaming in PVE efforts and enhancement of inter-parliamentarian cooperation in Central Asia concerning PCVE.

Ms. Alilya Sadikhova, Executive Secretary of the Women Parliamentarians Group delivered a speech on how TURKPA supports and promotes gender equality and empowerment of women’ leadership on the session dedicated to the “Parliamentarian Assemblies experiences on engaging women and gender mainstreaming in PCVE efforts“.

On the second day of the forum presentations were made and discussions were held between civil society representatives and parliamentarians and representatives of the executive bodies of the countries participating in the event. During the discussion, there was an exchange of experience of countries in the development of national roadmaps for the development of security and gender equality.

At the closing of the forum, the members of the gathering concurred to proceed to create each conceivable exertion, to extend the support and participation of women to address the existing gender issues, to attain the objectives of actualizing national action plans to counter terrorism and violent extremism.
