TURKPA participated at IPU Assembly

TURKPA Chairman-in-Office and the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) Mr. Mustafa Şentop attended the 140th IPU Assembly and related meetings took place in Doha, Qatar between 6 and 10 April 2019.

Over 1600 parliamentarians, including delegations from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, UN partners and experts from around the world gathered in the Qatari capital that featured general debate on a theme of Parliaments as platforms to enhance education for peace, security and the rule of law.

Staff of the TURKPA Secretariat headed by Secretary General Mr. Altynbek Mamaiusupov attended the 140th Assembly in capacity of an observer and met with TURKPA Chairman-in-Office Mr. Mustafa Şentop and Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Nurlan Nigmatulin, as well as other parliamentarians from the member countries.

On the Assembly’s sidelines, Secretary General also held meetings with IPU President Ms. Gabriela Cuevas Barron and IPU Secretary General Mr. Martin Chungong. The parties discussed the aspects of cooperation between two organizations, including a possibility of organizing joint events.

Secretary General also attended the Meeting with the heads of regional inter-parliamentary organizations, which was held in the framework of the IPU Assembly on 6 April and made a speech at the meeting. The work, mission and objectives of the different regional parliamentary organisations as well as the main global challenges facing governance and democracy were discussed during the meeting.

TURKPA was granted an observer status in the IPU in 2010.
