International Migrants Day celebrated in Baku

On 18 December 2018, event dedicated to the International Migrants Day and the project "Strengthening of Migration and Border Management Capacity in Azerbaijan" was held within the framework of joint efforts of the State Migration Service, Ombudsman Office, IOM Mission in Azerbaijan and the United Nations.

Talking at the opening ceremony, Chief of the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan Vusal Huseynov, Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova, the UN Resident Coordinator Ghulam Isaczai and the acting Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Azerbaijan Meltem Ersan talked about the importance of International Migrants Day in terms of focusing and informing the public on the problems of migrants.

It was noted that, as a result of work carried out in the field of migration in Azerbaijan during the past period, measures on regulation of migration processes on a single and flexible procedure, simplification of documentation and ensuring foreigners' convenience have been expanded. It was emphasized that protection of migrants and human rights in Azerbaijan is a priority. With good attitude towards migrants and refugees, Azerbaijan has created a model of migration management that can serve as an example for all countries around the world.

In the end, a short film "Yad" (Stranger) was screened and presentations were made on the project "Strengthening of Migration and Border Management Capacity in Azerbaijan".

At the event TURKPA was represented by Emin Hasanov, Secretary of the Commission on Environment and Natural Resources.
