Workshop on combating desertification in Turkic-speaking countries held in Konya
The workshop was attended by experts from the parliaments of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs and Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock of the Republic of Turkey, Konya Selcuk University and Konya Research Institute for Soil, Water and Combating Desertification.
During the first session of the workshop participants made presentations and discussions on the current situation of the TURKPA member countries regarding desertification. In the second session participants made speeches on issues such as activities on combating desertification in TURKPA member countries and combating desertification activities on agricultural lands. Participants noted to deepen cooperation in order to improve legislation on the issue.
The participants conducted discussions and adopted a concluding report of the workshop to be presented to the 2nd meeting of the TURKPA Commission on Environment and Natural Resources which will be held on 19 April 2016 in Baku.
On 8 April 2016, participants of the workshop for the combating desertification in the Turkic speaking countries visited Research Institute for Soil, Water and Combating Desertification in Karapinar located 90 km away from Konya. In the scope of the visit Mr. Durmuş Ali Çarkacı, Head of the Institute made a video presentation on their activities regarding combating desertification. Dr. Ramazan Acar, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Agriculture of the Agronomy Department of Selcuk University also made a presentation on the shrubs that can be used in pastures exposed to erosive process.
Then participants visited the research areas and were informed on the measures taken against desertification. During the visit each participant planted trees in the specially allocated area for participants of the expert meeting.
